National professional qualifications (NPQs) are a national, voluntary suite of qualifications designed to support the professional development of teachers and leaders. More information about existing NPQs is available from the Department of Education.
Changes to NPQs
From September 2021, a reformed suite of NPQs will be available for teachers and leaders who want to develop their knowledge and skills in school leadership and specialist areas of teaching practice.
They will now form part of the “golden thread” of professional development for colleagues leading on from the new Early Career Framework (ECF) and in line with the Recruitment and Retention initiative. There is now an expectation that most schools will have colleagues on these programmes and funding could be available to fund some of this.
UCL and Sussex Coast Alliance
UCL Centre for Educational Leadership have partnered with Sussex Coast Schools Alliance to offer a range of NPQs, starting in November 2021.
UCL’s university and delivery partners have drawn on their teacher education expertise to design programmes with the following characteristics:
- Knowledge and evidence-based
- Drawn from expert theory and current practice
- Inquiry-based spiral learning
- Learning embedded in practice, not an additional burden
- Located near you
