New National Professional Qualifications (NPQs)

National professional qualifications (NPQs) are a national, voluntary suite of qualifications designed to support the professional development of teachers and leaders. More information about existing NPQs is available from the Department of Education.

Changes to NPQs

From September 2021, a reformed suite of NPQs will be available for teachers and leaders who want to develop their knowledge and skills in school leadership and specialist areas of teaching practice.

They will now form part of the “golden thread” of professional development for colleagues leading on from the new Early Career Framework (ECF) and in line with the Recruitment and Retention initiative. There is now an expectation that most schools will have colleagues on these programmes and funding could be available to fund some of this.

One of the main changes is that NPQML is being replaced by three specialist NPQs in:

  • leading teacher development
  • leading teaching
  • leading behaviour and culture

NPQSL and NPQH remain a separate qualification although content has changed.

NPQ providers

Lead training providers will deliver the reformed suite of national professional qualifications from September 2021. They are:

These providers have been chosen by a fair and open procurement process by the Department for Education.
